Is Austin Really The Conversion Capital of the World? Vancouver says “No Way, eh.”
Vancouver, B.C. – February 7, 2014 – Conversion experts in Vancouver are appalled at the latest article to come out of the Conversion Scientist’s Lab in Austin.
“The self-proclaimed scientists over at the Conversion Science lab want accomplished internet marketing, website developers, and conversion rate optimizers to believe that: A. Austin is a real place in Texas or Oklahoma or something and B. they are the conversion capital of the world. This is utterly ridiculous” howled conversion specialists all throughout Vancouver earlier this week.
When residents of Vancouver heard about the article, supporters began gathering outside of Vancouver’s esteemed Conversion Optimization companies like Widerfunnel, Unbounce.com and Crowdvert.com. So many devotees showed up along the streets of Vancouver, local Mounties had to get involved.
“It was complete pandemonium. People were talking about some place called Austin being the Conversion Capital of the World. Even I know that is crazy talk,” one of the local Mounties said.

“One Eisenberg Brother does not make a city the Conversion capitol,” said Mary Fremdondi a protester, referring to conversion industry founder Bryan Eisenberg. It was later confirmed that both Eisenberg brothers, Bryan and Jeffrey, reside in Austin.

Vancouver power players came out in force against Austin’s claim:
“We are willing to admit that Austin is ahead of Vancouver alphabetically, but that is as far as we go,” said Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson.
“Austin, who?” said Chris Goward, CEO of Vancouver’s WiderFunnel. “Vancouver, Canada is clearly the Conversion Optimization capital. But, I hear Austin does have good BBQ!”
“Austin Powers? I don’t think he was a conversion expert,” declared Oli Gardner, Co-Founder of Vancouver landing page company Unbounce.
“While it can feel great to ‘declare’ things, this often happens too early and before a level of statistical confidence is reached. In this case I would certainly want to see more data!” said Jeremy Wallace, Partner at Vancouver’s Crowdvert.com.
“It’s infuriating. This sort of thing makes us regret declaring Vancouver a Nuclear Weapons Free Zone,” said a government official on condition of anonymity.
In related news, Montreal declared itself “Le Capital de Conversion du Monde.” Unfortunately, no one else in Canada knows what that means.

Sochi, Russia. – February 7, 2014 – On the day of the opening ceremonies for the 2014 Winter Olympics, the mayor of Sochi, Russia, says there is no way that Austin, Texas is the Conversion Capital of the World.
The city of Austin sent shock-waves throughout the world on Wednesday, declaring themselves the “Conversion Capital of the World.” The response from Sochi, Russia, home of the 2014 Winter Olympics was swift.
“I don’t know what they are converting, but I know that Sochi is better,” said Sochi mayor, Anatoly Pakhomov at a quickly assembled press conference.
“We are not even sure that Austin exists,” Pakhomov continued. His press office released a map of Texas in which Austin seems to have been erased.

“We have spared no expense preparing for the Olympics,” Pakhomov told the BBC in an interview that airs just a few days before the commencement of the 2014 Winter Olympics. “No city can claim to be above Sochi in anything until they have spent billions of rubles like us, especially a city that may not even exist.”
When pressed for evidence that Sochi had conversion rate optimization talent equivalent to Austin, Pakhomov abruptly ended the interview saying, “Don’t make me call Putin.”

Before Unique Influence, Ryan managed a team at ProfitFuel (Yodle) that provided SEO and PPC services to over 10,000 businesses. He has also helped some of the most successful consumer-based online businesses in Austin, including HomeAway.com.

Ryan received his BA in Philosophy and Economics and MBA from the University of Texas at Austin. Obviously he chose to stay.

Why Austin?

Austin has a thriving community of companies provide services and sell products on the Internet. As a digital advertising expert, it’s a fantastic place to be able to help a large number of companies be successful.
Austin is also seeing a lot of growth, especially in the realm of digital. I expect this growth to continue, which will make the future even brighter for consultancies like ours who help these companies grow.

Roger Dooley, Neuromarketing and Brainy Marketing, @rogerdooley

clip_image025Roger Dooley is an author, international keynote speaker, and consultant.  He recently published Brainfluence: 100 Ways to Persuade and Convince Consumers with Neuromarketing  (Wiley), which is all about smarter marketing. And he writes the popular blog Neuromarketing as well as Brainy Marketing at Forbes.com.
He is the founder of Dooley Direct, a marketing consultancy, and co-founded College Confidential, the leading college-bound website.  The latter business was acquired by Hobsons, a unit of UK-based DMGT, where Dooley served as VP Digital Marketing and continues in a consulting role.

He often applies neuroscience and psychology research to conversion optimization, and has been a keynote speaker at the Conversion Conference, Pubcon Masters Training, and ConversionSUMMIT (Frankfurt).

Why Austin?

When we decided to move from snowy, low-tech northern Indiana, we wanted a location with warmer weather and a great tech community. Austin had both, and offered a great lifestyle, too.

I knew about companies like Dell, AMD, and others with big operations here, but I was surprised at the size and diversity of the web marketing community. Meet-ups on topics like SEO, social media, Internet marketing, affiliate marketing, and other specialty interests are well attended, often drawing over a hundred attendees. As a plus, when one weighs cost of living, state taxes, etc., Austin compares very favorably with the Bay Area and other hubs of tech activity.

Ethan Luke Stenis, Street Authority, @elstenis

From optimizing landing pages, RPMs and conversion rates to managing site operations and web production, Luke specializes in content strategy, CRO, UX, SEO/SEM, and project and brand management.

An inexhaustible music scene and reputable MA program brought Luke to Austin, and the city’s entrepreneurial, liberal spirit kept his creativity comfortably nestled in the “512.” (For non-natives, 512 is Austin’s area code.)
When Luke isn’t crunching the data, he is digging through vinyl records, playing pub-league soccer, eating breakfast tacos and hanging out with his beautiful, pregnant wife (they are due during SXSW ’14).

Austin offers rich soil to companies that want to be successful online.

Whether it’s the tacos or the people, the music scene or the mandate to keep it weird, there’s no denying the magnetic pull of this city.

And let’s face it, when you can rub shoulders with the likes of these CRO experts, enjoy the food and fun only available in Austin, you have to agree it honestly is the conversion capital of the world.

If you feel the pull to join them, don’t resist. This cluster is definitely worth exploring.

Brian and his Brain

Smart is sexy. Brains? Well maybe not.


While I think we look smashing in our lab coats, I can’t say that I’ve ever thought of what we do as “Sexy.” Conversion Science is exciting, challenging and perplexing, a perfect combination for the trained and curious person drawn to this kind of work.
But sexy?
Writing in The Harvard Business Review authors Thomas H. Davenport and D.J. Patil think that the Data Scientist is the “Sexiest Job of the 21st Century.” Hmmm.
Are Conversion Scientists actually Data Scientists? Yes, they are — with a few important differences.

The HBR calls them “high-ranking professionals with the training and curiosity to make discoveries in the world of big data.” I hate the phrase “big data” because it implies that mortal humans can’t get their heads around it. Trust me. We can.
The two terms are relatively new. The term “Data Scientist” has only been around since 2008 when it was coined by the analytics brainiacs at LinkedIn and Facebook. “Conversion Scientists” was coined in 2006 by yours truly.
There is no degree program for either one of these professions.
Like Data Scientists, Conversion Scientists are hard to come by and we hope you will kindly send us a note if you’ve seen one in the wild. We’re hiring.
Davenport and Patil nail it when they say:

What kind of person does all this? Think of him or her as a hybrid of data hacker, analyst, communicator, and trusted adviser. The combination is extremely powerful.
But we would say the dominant trait among data scientists is an intense curiosity—a desire to go beneath the surface of a problem, find the questions at its heart, and distill them into a very clear set of hypotheses that can be tested.
And while people without strong social skills might thrive in traditional data professions, data scientists must have such skills to be effective.

Oh yah. That is a Conversion Scientist.

The Differences

The authors of the HBR article state that “More than anything, what data scientists do is make discoveries while swimming in data.” This would not be sufficient for a Conversion Scientist. Sure we wade, snorkel and Slip ‘n’ Slide through data. But we must also create our own targeted data. This is most commonly done with testing.
We design creative tests for web pages, paid search campaigns, emails, and shopping carts.
It is important to both professions that we be able to communicate effectively. Discovering things is only helpful when those discoveries result in “new business directions.”
For the Conversion Scientist, these new business directions must head toward more leads and more revenue. We’re the capitalists of the Data Scientist community.
That’s basically how you afford your Conversion Scientists: They produce measurable upsides in business results.

Are You a Conversion Scientist?

Since there is no degree program, Conversion Scientists come from the worlds of search optimization, online advertising and performance marketing. They choose positions based on how interesting the data challenges they will be working with are and how much of an impact they will have.
Conversion Scientists are fascinated with the things we learn about human behavior through testing and analysis. So are businesses, as it turns out.
The authors also state that, “…the data scientists we’ve spoken with say they want to build things, not just give advice to a decision maker.” This is true of Conversion Scientists. They want to see the fruits of their labor, not just present reports on their discoveries.
